A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
